Project Focus: Circular Economy Plastic Resource Development (2 positions)

This internship provides a unique opportunity for students interested in innovation and sustainability to develop their skills while actively contributing within a professional setting alongside innovators, scientists, educators, and environmental specialists at UOG CIS & SG.

Internship Details 

The intern will receive mentorship from G3 Makerspace staff and will work closely with the overall UOG CIS & SG team, with a special focus on recycled plastics used in fusing techniques and circular economy initiatives.  The intern will learn to operate makerspace equipment, such as laser engravers, routers, and hand tools, to prototype and manufacture items using reclaimed and recycled materials. Each internship experience will be tailored to the intern’s interests and goals, with work plans co-created between mentor and intern to achieve shared objectives while emphasizing the intern’s desired skill development and experiences.

The intern will participate in the Guam Green Growth (G3) Circular Economy Makerspace and Innovation Hub (G3 Hub). Activities include, but are not limited to:  
  • Collecting resources for makerspace (i.e., plastic, fabric, wood, etc.) 
  • Assisting with product‐making workshops for the community 
  • Circular Economy projects & recycling 
  • Prototyping and development

Schedule to be determined with site supervisors at the G3 Hub.

Eligibility 

  •   • Current undergraduate student status 
  •   • Interest in STEM, conservation, or sustainability 
  •   • Reliable transportation  
  •   • Availability during the weekdays and some evenings 

Stipend 

  •   • $1,500 stipend upon completion of program (minimum 150 hours) 

Internship Timeline 

  • February 2, 2026- May 29, 2026 (or upon completion of 150 hours) 

Post-Internship Requirements 

Upon completion of the term, the intern will write a brief article and an internship report, as well as give a presentation of their experience to the community. It is recommended to keep good notes throughout the term for reference when writing the article and report. 

  • Napu News Article 

     • The article will be a personal summary of their internship experience for the UOG CIS & SG online newsletter, Napu News (450-word max). 

  • Internship Report to include: 

  •      • Organization information (you can get info from seagrant.uog.edu) 
  •      • Internship description (tell us what you did, who you worked with, etc.) 
  •      • Overview of internship experience (what did you learn, what skills did you use/gain, what was challenging, etc.) 
  •      • Ongoing consideration (what would you like to do now, what more would you like to learn, etc.)

Program Overview 

During this 20-week program, students will be matched with a mentor working in a sustainability field to conduct either research or extension work addressing regional sustainability issues, including conservation, waste management, and more.

Program Benefits 

  • Part-time, paid, 20-week fellowship that supports career development. 
  • Conduct independent research under the guidance of a mentor. 
  • Develop essential communication and organizational skills.   

Eligibility 

The fellowship is open to any undergraduate currently enrolled at an accredited college/university in Guam, or another college or university, but attended high school in Micronesia (including Guam).

Program Details and Expectations for Students 

  •  • The program will run for 20 weeks from start date.  
  •  • Fellows must commit to 10-15 hours per week (minimum of 200 hours) on a schedule agreed upon between themselves and their mentor. 
  •  • Interns are required to present their research at a Guam Green Growth Science Café event (TBD) at the end of the program. 
  •  • Interns are required to write a short reflection on their accomplishments and experiences at the end of the program.  

Stipend 

 • $2,500 stipend (disbursed in $500 monthly installments) will be provided to support the 20-week internship program.
