University of Guam Center for Island Sustainability and Sea Grant Graduate Research Assistantship (2024-2025)

 

Guam Sea Grant is pleased to announce the opening of applications for its Graduate Research Assistantship, focusing on marine and environmental sciences.

The Graduate Research Assistantship provides a unique opportunity for graduate students to develop their research skills while contributing to sustainability and environmental science initiatives at the University of Guam Center for Island Sustainability and Sea Grant (UOG CIS/SG). This educational fellowship aims to advance environmental literacy and workforce development.

 

 

Details:

Graduate Research Assistants (GRA) will be mentored by an experienced UOG CIS/SG researcher and will work closely with a diverse team of scientists, educators, and environmental specialists. Each student’s experience will be tailored to the student’s interests and academic goals, with work plans co-created between mentor and intern to achieve shared objectives while emphasizing the intern’s desired skill development and experiences.

 

 

Experiences:

GRA responsibilities encompass a range of research-focused tasks, including:

• Conducting field and laboratory research

• Data collection and analysis

• Scientific writing

• Conducting outreach and community engagement activities related to research projects

• Collaborating with community stakeholders and partners

• Timely report and grant document submissions

GRAs (Graduate Research Assistants) will develop and periodically review a work plan in consultation with their mentor to ensure timely completion of research deliverable(s).

 

 

Eligibility:

• Bachelor’s degree in marine, environmental, or relevant sciences

• Graduate students who have been accepted or intend to enroll at the University of Guam, or are currently enrolled at UOG (undergraduate transcripts required)

• Applicants should have a strong interest in marine and environmental sciences

 

 

Stipends:

• Stipends for interns are set at $18,000 annually (1 year)

• Stipends will be dispersed in monthly increments

• Work hours and expected outcomes are to be decided among mentor and intern (suggested ~20 hours per week)

Makerspace and Innovation Hub Internship: Marine Debris Circular Economy Innovation Hub

 

Guam Sea Grant is thrilled to announce the opening of applications for its inaugural Guam Green Growth Circular Economy Makerspace and Innovation Hub (G3 Makerspace) Internship, focusing on recycling reclaimed plastics and 3D printing within our very own makerspace and innovation hub. Applications open July 1, 2024.

 

 

The G3 Makerspace Internship provides a unique opportunity for students interested in innovation and sustainability to develop their skills while actively contributing within a professional setting alongside innovators, scientists, educators, and environmental specialists at the University of Guam Center for Island Sustainability and Sea Grant (UOG CIS/SG).

 

Internship Details

Interns will receive mentorship from G3 Makerspace makers and will work closely with the overall UOG CIS/SG team with a special focus on plastics and 3D printing-related and circular economy initiatives. Each internship experience will be tailored to the intern’s interests and goals, with work plans co-created between mentor and intern to achieve shared objectives while emphasizing the intern’s desired skill development and experiences.

  • Hands-on activities within the hub
  • Research and writing
  • Conducting outreach and community engagement activities
  • Engaging with community stakeholders and partners

Interns will develop and periodically assess work plans in consultation with their mentor to ensure timely completion of internship deliverable(s).

  • Undergraduates enrolled at the University of Guam or Guam Community College (unofficial transcripts required, no credit minimum required)
  • Applicants should have an interest in environmental sustainability, 3D printing, interest in computer science, interest in marine and environmental sciences

Project Description

The Guam Green Growth Circular Economy Makerspace and Innovation Hub (G3 Makerspace) Intern will concentrate on conducting research on reducing plastic waste and diverting plastics into sustainable industrial materials.  Objectives will focus on waste diversion, product development, developing sustainable methods for 3D printing, and engaging the community with learned outcomes.

 

Science Communication and Community Engagement Team

The University of Guam Center for Island Sustainability and Sea Grant is now accepting applications for its Science Communicator Internship. Apply by June 28, 2024. This internship provides a unique opportunity for undergraduate students to develop skills in science communication, outreach, and community engagement while working alongside a diverse team at the UOG CIS/SG. This educational fellowship aims to enhance environmental literacy and workforce development.

 

Internship Details

Interns will be mentored by UOG CIS/SG Associate Director for Communications and Community Engagement and work closely with the CIS/Sea Grant science communications and community engagement team. The focus and scope of each internship are customized, and work plans are developed collaboratively between the mentor and intern to achieve shared goals while prioritizing the skills and experiences desired by the intern. Interns are expected to work with their mentor to develop a work schedule completing at least 100 hours. 

 

Stipend

Each intern will receive a $1,000 stipend. 

 

Internship Experiences

Internship experiences will include a variety of tasks such as: 

  • Writing and developing communication campaigns
  • Conducting outreach and community engagement activities
  • Engaging with community members and partners to understand needs and shape communication goals and methods
  • Engaging in content research, creation, and social media management to effectively communicate scientific concepts and foster public engagement
  • Interns will develop and periodically review a work plan in consultation with their mentor to ensure milestones and deliverables are achieved.
