The Guam Green Growth Local2030 Islands Network Conservation Corps (G3LIONCC) recently wrapped up a training module with the University of Guam’s Center for Island Sustainability and Sea Grant (UOG CIS and SG) Natural Resources team, working to safeguard Guam’s endangered plant species.
This development effort aims to bolster research and conservation efforts for these delicate and vital components of Guam’s unique ecosystem.
GLINCC members, a dedicated group of UOG Tritons who are passionate about environmental conservation from all over Micronesia, received hands-on training and learned about fieldwork, data collection, propagation and the outreach and education efforts that go into the conservation of native and endangered species.
As a graduate from the original G3 Conservation Corps, Jacob Concepcion, who is now a part of the Natural Resources team sees the value in the groups participation.
“Having been a student going and growing through this process, it is great to see these members showcase their dedication and passion for sustainability,” said Concepcion. “They will be able to learn so much with this program and take it back to their home islands to help develop their community.”
The G3LINCC, a program under the Guam Green Growth Initiative, empowers young people to become leaders in sustainability and environmental protection and is made up completely of UOG students from Micronesian islands currently living in the UOG Residence Halls.
Member Blaine Melari took a lot from the lesson and looks forward to implementing his new knowledge in his home island of Palau. “There are native and endemic plants in Palau that we need to conserve and protect. We learned a lot from this lesson,” he said.
By providing opportunities for hands-on experience and skill development, the Corps is cultivating the next generation of environmental stewards with reach throughout Micronesia.
Through this collaboration, the G3 Corps and UOG CIS and Sea Grant are working towards a shared goal of preserving Guam’s natural heritage for future generations.
