University of Guam (UOG) student Cyril Concepcion has successfully completed her term as the first-ever intern with the UOG Center for Island Sustainability and Sea Grant Program’s Science Communication Internship.
This unique program, designed to bridge the gap between scientific research and public understanding, provided Concepcion with invaluable hands-on experience in communicating complex scientific concepts to a broad audience.
During their internship, she was tasked with a variety of projects aimed at improving science communication. These projects included:
“This internship is designed to help provide students with hands-on experience in the field with capable and thoughtful mentorship,” explained associate director for communications and community engagement Kyle Mandapat. “Cyril immediately jumped into everything we were doing and really relished in the opportunity to develop skillsets we consider fundamental in the communications game.”
According to Mandapat, Concepcion displayed an eagerness and openness to experience new things while learning the craft of science communication.
“She really was down for just about anything,” said Mandapat. “She took pictures, covered events, and even jumped on the radio and guest hosted with a moment’s notice. She did a great job!”
Concepcion, a first-year civil engineering major, explained that the experience she gained during this internship will be beneficial.
“I learned a lot from my experience. I learned photography and editing. I took pictures out in the field with the G3 CC. I even got to take pictures during the snake hunt. I got to host and be a guest on the Sustainability Waves show,” said Concepcion. “It was an amazing experience!”
The UOG Sea Grant Program is committed to fostering a culture of scientific literacy and promoting public understanding of marine science. The Science Communication Internship is just one of the many initiatives that the program has undertaken to achieve this goal.
The UOG Sea Grant Program is a partnership between the University of Guam and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) that supports research, education, and outreach related to coastal and marine resources. The program’s mission is to promote the sustainable use and conservation of Guam’s marine environment.
